Maldives and Sri Lanka
Measles and rubella eliminated, ahead of 2023 target
Both Maldives and Sri Lanka are now verified as having eliminated measles and rubella, thanks to a well performing surveillance system. More than half of all countries reported moderate-to-severe disruptions or a total suspension of vaccination services due to COVID-19, but the two countries have continued efforts to resume immunisation despite the pandemic.
Somalia
A triple threat of COVID-19, locusts, and flooding
This year's locust outbreak is Somalia's worst in 25 years, threatening food supply, exacerbated by heavy floods that have displaced half a million people. Then came COVID-19. But in a country already fighting many serious threats such as terrorist groups, WHO's country representative is resolute: "We can only end this pandemic if we can end it in settings like Somalia."
Yemen
Non-communicable diseases: stories of a silent burden on people
Patients suffering from chronic diseases in Yemen live with the extra burden of not being able access or afford treatment amidst the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. In response, WHO and partners are supporting 189 of the 252 operational hospitals across Yemen, so that up to 4.34 million people will have access to health services.
Iran
WHO strengthens influenza response
WHO delivered supplies to strengthen the national influenza centre in the Islamic Republic of Iran, including laboratory supplies for testing for influenza by real time PCR and viral isolation, to prepare the country for the upcoming winter season.
Bangladesh
COVID-19 response in Rohingya Camps
Dozens of Rohingyas have tested positive for COVID-19 in the camps in Cox's Bazar. To protect them and their host communities from widespread transmission, WHO and local partners recently trained over 300 volunteers on contact tracing using the Go.Data software to enable efficient and effective tracing of persons who have been in contact with the confirmed cases.
Syria
12 million people in need of aid; over 6 million displaced, living in camps
As the conflict enters its tenth year, WHO has called on all parties to the conflict and the international donor community to put the health and well-being of the Syrian people first. Syrians now also face an unprecedented socio-economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to other public health risks.
Costa Rica
Protective equipment received to combat malaria
The Ministry of Health welcomed a donation of personal protective equipment (PPE) from WHO and the Inter-American Development Bank to carry out detection and diagnosis of malaria in Costa Rica, as well as for treatment, case investigation, and response work.
Burkina Faso
Polio vaccination campaigns resumed under strict COVID-19 measures
"We cannot wait for COVID-19 to be contained to resume immunisation. If we stop immunisation for too long, including for polio, vaccine-preventable diseases will have a detrimental effect on children's health across the region," says Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.
Turkey
Telephone counselling service helps those dealing with COVID-19 stress
Since its launch in March, the call-in service has reached more than 80 000 health workers and citizens across all of Turkey's 81 provinces, to help them manage stress, access mental health services, and cope with the stressors caused by changes in their lives brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. It also assists individuals with chronic mental illness and provides a referral mechanism for people who need to access other social services.
