Eastern Mediterranean Region
One million patients recovered from COVID-19
More than one million people have recovered from COVID-19 in the Eastern Mediterranean region, a welcome and significant milestone reflecting the efforts of countries to tackle the pandemic. Regional Director Dr Ahmed Al-Mandhari continues to remind everyone of the need to stay informed and take appropriate measures to protect themselves and others. "Despite the increasing numbers of cases reported, there are proven measures that work: strong government leadership, informed and engaged communities, and promoting the recovery of patients."
Ethiopia
Using experiences from the Polio Programme in responding to COVID-19
Berhane Beyene's 22-year experience in polio programmes and working on other viral pathogens helped her to support the establishment of COVID-19 laboratory testing capacity during the current pandemic. Now she coordinates the laboratory pillar and expansion of COVID-19 testing laboratories at the national and regional levels throughout the country.
Nigeria
Two million children receive anti-malaria medication
About 8,000 community health care workers delivered Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) to about two million children in Borno state, to protect them for this year's peak transmission season. Apart from distributing the drugs, the door-to-door campaign focuses on anti-malarial community sensitization and awareness, risk communication and social mobilization, as well as referral of sick people for facility care.

Democratic Republic of Congo
Ebola cases rise, surpass previous outbreak in the province
The Ebola outbreak in Equateur Province has spread to at least six health zones, causing major concern as critical funding gap looms. Responding to Ebola in the midst of COVID-19 has been complex, and as the ongoing Ebola response is threatened by funding shortfalls, additional support is needed to ensure all affected communities receive key services; including health education and community engagement, vaccination, testing, contact tracing, and treatment. Africa Regional Director Dr Matshidiso Moeti warns: "we must not let the [COVID-19] pandemic distract us from tackling other pressing health threats."
Malaysia
Hepatitis: From crisis to hope
Mr Yen did not even know he had Hepatitis C until his diagnosis. But he beat the disease, thanks to the support from family and friends, and the government's initiative to provide free testing and a three- to six-month course of treatment. Now that he is cured, Mr Yen volunteers at the Crisis Home, a non-profit organization that cares for individuals living with hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. The programmes include the management of shelter homes and community engagement through support and outreach.
Philippines
Polio campaign resumes
The 'Sabayang Patak Kontra Polio' campaign, which seeks to combat the poliovirus outbreak in the country, has resumed after briefly being put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The polio outbreak in the country was announced in September 2019. As of this month, 15 more children have since been confirmed with polio.
Maldives
Go.Data software helps in tracing COVID-19 patients and their contacts
A WHO software tool for outbreak investigation and contact tracing, called Go.Data, has been effective in the Maldives. The software manages large amounts of data, and is used to investigate cases, conduct follow-ups, and visualise chains of transmission, and to make crucial public health decisions in containing the outbreak.
Sudan
EU strengthens Sudan's COVID-19 response and health system
The European Union donated €11.5 million to the COVID-19 response in Sudan, and to improve the country's overall health system. The two-year project benefits 42 million people, including internally displaced groups and refugees, and covers health preparedness needs across the country, training of healthcare staff and community members, case management, upgrade of three regional laboratories, treating patients, and community engagement to help people protect themselves and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
